OHS Hall of Fame - 64 CIF Champs
Three individuals and four CIF championship teams were inducted into Oxnard High School's Hall of Fame last week, joining alumni honored last year as the first group of inductees.
This year, Ken Benefield, Class of 1951; Stan Daily, Class of 1953; and Alfred Reft, Class of 2001; were honored at a ceremony Friday. Four CIF championship teams also were inducted: the 1920 track and field team, the 1964 cross country team, the 1997 girls basketball team and the 2003 girls tennis team.
"Many people identify with this school, so it's important that we have something like this," Principal Eric Riegert said of the Hall of Fame. "It's really so our kids can see what other alumni have done and set their goals, as well."
The school community honored the inductees during Homecoming Week. A reception Friday afternoon was followed by the induction ceremony at 6 p.m. in the campus library. Inductees received a plaque and were invited to join the homecoming parade.
The Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding individuals or teams that have maintained a standard of excellence and significantly contributed to the school, in their fields of endeavor or both, according to the school's website.
"This Hall of Fame is to honor and permanently preserve the legacy of those who have excelled as Yellowjackets and serves as examples that will inspire our youth to achieve greatness of their own in the future," the website says.
Anyone can nominate an individual or team. Nominees must be Oxnard High graduates or former employees who have been out of the school system for at least a year when nominated. They must have served society, made a major achievement or succeeded in business, the arts, government, law, sports, agriculture, the military, science, law enforcement or other career fields.
Teams also are considered for nominations based on their achievement in high school, Riegert said.
The Nomination and Selection Committee members this year were Ted Lawrence, a teacher at Oxnard High and the school's former athletic director; Terry Lopez, an administration staff member at the school; and teachers Connie Cervera and Rick Garcia.
